Over the past few days, I have been missing one of my favorite religion news sources — the Religion News Service’s daily roundup — because the RNS journalists are attending the Religion Newswriters Association Conference in Denver. I had considered attending, but after reviewing the schedule, which is heavy on Christian scriptural topics and “featured” Denver’s Catholic Archbishop Chaput as a keynote speaker, I decided it best not to attend. I feel sorry for the journalist attendees, many of whom have truly inquiring minds that must be thoroughly numbed by now.
True to his reactionary form, Chaput chided the gathered journalists for “disrespecting religion,” even as he continues to defend the Catholic Church’s position that Africans should not be using condoms and that pedophile priests should be protected. Needless to say, none of this went over well with New York Times religion reporter Laurie Goodstein, and prompted a poorly reported exchange between the two.
